Facebook has made me realize I may actually be a Voyeur? Lol, of course I don't mean this in the sexual context. I'm not a Stalker.... I swear I'm not...but my recent actions has made me realize that something isn't right...I actually may be morphing into, dare I say...a Voyeur!
Voyeurism has moved from the peeping Tom to the more acceptable "watcher", with the success of reality programs and of course facebook, twitter etc, wetting our voyeuristic tendencies.
People are interested in other peoples lives let's face it. I don't think I'm wrong when I say social networking sites like Facebook breeds voyeurism ( please tell me I'm not a deviant).
Facebook has given the casual voyeur the ability to anonymously sit and watch people broadcast their lives to the world, taking voyeurism to new heights.
Mass social voyeurism as a culture, has emerged as technology becomes more integrated into our lives and communicating via social media is becoming more invasive.
For those that don't want to be watched. Have you looked at your privacy settings ?
Because its not the potential stalker "friend" that you may actually know or have come across at some point in your life....its their facebook friends who "you might know"
Its about those that look at your pictures and privately lust over you and can track your daily activities from the numerous status updates and pictures posted ( I'm guilty of this...but I don't mind lol).
Or those that envied you in school and have come across your profile only to rejoice at the fact you went on to have 10 babies and the once Naomi Campbell look alike now looks more like Naomi Scrambles :(
What does this say about society and the changes occurring? We have managed to titillate ourselves by the mundane. Keeping ourselves entertained by watching the sleeping big brother contestants or sitting in front of the computer for hours scrolling through tweets and other status updates. watching the psychological emotional wrecks , lurid self confessions, picture evidence of fashion victims etc.
So don't feel bad about this guilty pleasure, embrace it, your in good company.
