The Senate yesterday accused the National
Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for deploying its newly employed
2,000 operatives to the various states and area commands without
training.
Adopting a motion sponsored by Senator Heineken Lokpobiri (PDP, Bayelsa North) and 25 others, the Senate maintained that personnel of the agency ought to be trained and retrained in basic law enforcement and drug law enforcement and security management.
Miffed by the revelation by the Senate Committee Chairman on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes, Senator Victor Lar (PDP, Plateau South) that the agency had no budgetary allocation for training in the past four years, various senators, in their contributions, advocated funding for the training of the NDLEA staff.
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and Senator George Sekibo (PDP, Rivers) argued that the agency ought not to have recruited the officers since there was no provision for their training.
The senate urged the NDLEA to withdraw the untrained operatives and urged its Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes to investigate the recruitment and deployment of "untrained staff bearing arms across the country."
