Team Attacked In Dressing Room
The assistant coach
and a defender of visiting Nigerian club Ocean Boys were taken to hospital in
serious condition after being attacked in the dressing room ahead of a league
game with local side Sharks
Two other team members were bruised and
bloodied in the attack, they said.
"We were in the dressing room
preparing to warm-up when their fans entered and attacked us," Ocean Boys
media officer Eddy Ohis said.
Officials said assistant coach Timi
Akosubo and defender Anthony Nwodo were in a serious condition. The Premier
League game was called off.
The attack was the latest incident in a
growing spiral of violence in the professional game in the west African
country, which has included attacks on referees by spectators and crowd
invasions of pitches in which visiting players are targeted.
There was widespread condemnation of
Sunday's incident but the Nigerian Premier League said it was waiting for a
report before commenting.
Philip Obaji
of the 'Football without Violence' campaign said: "Such a situation is
unacceptable. This is an attack not only on innocent people but on the image of
the NPL and we call for a full investigation and holding those responsible to account."

British Police Ready To Charge 3 More Ex Governors!
With the successful trial
and conviction of Delta State Ex Governor James Ibori, it seems like the
British Government is on a roll to seemingly achieve what the Nigerian
Government has had difficulty doing .
On April 17
2012, Jame Ibori was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for money laundering and
theft of $250m and now, it looks like the British Government are going for
others!
An undisclosed presidency
source in Abuja, has said, that the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, are assisting the London Met in their investigations
And they (London Metropolitan
Police) are at the final stages of its investigations and are about to bring
charges to three more ex-governors.
He said “Dariye,
Alamie-yeseighie and another ex-governor from the South-East, have substantial
evidence against them, but they are not the only ones on the list.
“The London Police are very
thorough. Most of the time, it is not about how fast you can finish
investigating a case, but waiting for substantial evidence is important so that
you can have a successful trial.
“If you look at the Ibori
case, you will understand how international fraud cases are conducted.
“A lot of international
co-operation is involved because the evidence needed are scattered all over the
world.
“But we have enough now for
the prosecution of the three I have mentioned. We just need to settle a few
things before their cases go to court.
“Nigeria and Britain have an
existing Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty; therefore, getting the suspects to the
UK won’t be a problem.
“It was through such
assistance that the Ibori case was put to a logical conclusion.”
Nigeria To Import Fuel From Niger Republic
The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke
As the Republic of Niger initiates plans to evacuate its
excess petroleum products it seems that Nigeria may soon start importing fuel
from the Country.
Niger Republic’s minister of petroleum, Mr. Foumakoye Gado,
is in the country to sign the African Petroleum Producers’ Association (APPA)
Statute, which will make Niger become a bonafide member of the association.
Gado told journalists during the signing ceremony yesterday in Abuja that Niger’s present refining capacity is 20,000 barrels of oil per day, out of which the country can only consume 7,000 barrels, an equivalent of 1.113million litres of fuel, while the excess of 13,000 barrels, an equivalent of 2.067million liters of fuel would be exported to Nigeria. The minister who spoke through an interpreter said, “We currently refine 20,000bpd and we consume only 7,000 barrels leaving an excess of 13,000 barrels. We hope to evacuate the excess to Nigeria. That is the major reason we are here.Source
He said the country in 2011 signed a contract for the commercialisation of crude production, adding that a feasibility study has been concluded to commence oil exportation which would boost its crude production from the current 20,000bpd to 60,000bpd.
He adding, however, that Niger presently does not have any specific target country for its crude export, but said it would be done according to international standard.
The minister who was accompanied to the event by Niger’s ambassador to Nigeria, H.E Mansourmanan H.D, explained that his country resolved to join APPA, despite being a small oil producing nation, in order to tap into the experience of other member countries and ensure that her oil prospecting is a source of blessing to the country and not a resource curse, based on lessons learnt from other countries.
While noting that the association’s objective will impact on the country’s technical know-how and help build local capacity, Gado said his country will ensure that oil proceed is used to accelerate development. He said the country would begin the construction of its oil export pipeline which will be routed through Cameroon in 2013, after which exportation will commence in 2014 or 2015.
The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum, Engr. Goni I. Sheikh, who represented the minister of petroleum, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, while welcoming Niger to the association, noted that signing the APPA Statute was mandatory for all member countries who wish to benefit fully from oil and gas exploration through the association’s support.
He said the objectives of the association include the promotion of cooperation among member countries in hydrocarbon exploration, promotion of technical assistance, coordination of marketing policies and strategies as well as studying ways of providing assistance to the oil importing African countries to meet their energy requirement.
While expressing optimism that the opportunity will further strengthen the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Niger Republic, Sheikh added that the association operates a fund which is dedicated to financing studies and projects in the hydrocarbon and energy sector of APPA member countries
Police Declare Saraki Wanted Over N21b Fraud
Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police Force has declared former governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki, wanted over a N21 billion bank loan fraud at the defunct Intercontinental Bank of Nigeria. The police order was issued shortly after Justice Gladys Olotu, presiding at the Federal High Court 4 in Abuja, denied the former governor (now a serving Senator), a plea to restrain the police from interrogating or arresting him.
Confirming the story, SFU spokesperson, Ngozi Isitume, said an arrest warrant is in place for the immediate arrest of the senator, who went into hiding after a Federal High Court in Abuja cleared the way for his arrest on Thursday. We received a green light that there is no injunction restraining us.”
Justice Olotu had in her judgement sided with the reasoning of the police counsel, Femi Falana, that regardless of Mr. Saraki’s rights to liberty, the police have the power to arrest, investigate and prosecute him upon reasonable suspicion that he committed a criminal offence. She also said in the circumstances of this case Mr. Saraki is not entitled to seek an interim injunction against the police.
Represented by three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, who were led by Saka Isiaku and Lawal Rabana, Mr. Saraki had prayed that Justice Olotu restrain the Special Anti-fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police from questioning him over his involvement in the N21 billion million loan scam perpetrated at the now defunct Intercontinental Bank.
In a press statement, Mr. Saraki had repeatedly claimed he had no hand in the said scam and that he had no relationship with the company, Joy Petroleum, used to move the money in contention. The police, however, insist that their records point strongly in the direction of Mr. Saraki and that, in any case, they would like to hear his own side of the story.
The police say they are puzzled by findings in the course of their investigation, particularly by revelations from the accounts of Joy Petroleum, from which they found that credit transfers were made at a time the sole operator of the account, Mr. Obahor, a former aide of Mr. Saraki, was long deceased.

At least six people have been killed in a gun and bomb attack at a university in Nigeria's northern city of Kano, witnesses and police said.
A bomb squad and military units are searching for the gunmen who mounted the attack at Bayero University.
Reports suggest the violence may have targeted Christian students who were holding a religious service in one of the lecture theatres.
An army spokesman said several wounded people had been taken to hospital.
"The attack took place in one of the lecture theatres used as a place of worship by Christians," said Lt Iweha Ikedichi.

Taiwo 'sickened' by age-cheat rumours
Nigeria international Taye Taiwo says he is sickened by rumours making the rounds about age cheating involving him and his late twin.
Taiwo turned 27 on April 16, but a BlackBerry broadcast message with unknown origins claimed that while the QPR defender was celebrating his 27th in London, his supposed twin brother was marking his 39th.
The message quickly went viral, with some claiming the supposed twin turned 37, and others 33.
It is, however, common knowledge among close friends and relatives of the Taiwos, that Taye's twin, a girl, died barely two months after they were born.
Taiwo, who helped Rangers to a critical 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend, is understandably angry.
"I don't know what kind of sick joke this is, or the kind of sick person who will come up with it," he tells KickOffNigeria.com. "I did not even know my twin. I was very young when my father told me that she died when we were young.
"Why is it that people are always looking for a way to bring others down? I don't understand it."

Minister of Power Professor Barth Nnaji Among 200 Passengers Stuck In Plane Due To Power Cut
Minister of Power Professor Barth Nnaji was among the over 200 passengers, who were stranded for over an hour inside the London-Abuja bound British Airways aircraft after its landing Saturday around morning due to power outage at the Abuja airport.
According to one of the passengers,
Nnaji was among the first class passengers of the British Airways X3
aircraft when the incident happened. The passenger, who didn’t want to be named, explained that they had a smooth flight from London until
they landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
“We touched down just some few minutes
to 5am. Just as we are taxing to the parking lot, the light at the
terminal building went off and there was total darkness,” he said.
He explained that, “after about five to
ten minutes, the pilot announced to us that we can’t disembark from the
plane because of power failure at the airport. We were frazzled by that
development, particularly after that long trip. “About 30 minutes later,
the pilot made another announcement saying that the airport authorities
couldn’t fix the light therefore, we should remain inside the plane
till day break.”
The passenger added that the pilot
explained that “it was better to remain inside the aircraft since there
is air-conditioning system, adding that even if we disembark, there was
darkness at the terminal. He said that the passengers remained inside
the aircraft for 1:25 minutes. But the Minister of Power, our source
said, decided to maintain “an embarrassing silence” while the incident
lasted. “After the light was restored, he just disembarked and slipped
away,” our source said.
The spokesperson of Federal Aviation
Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Mr Akin Olukunle earlier attributed the
incident to “technical failure.” A staff of the British Airways, who was
on duty at the airport when the incident occurred, said that after the
power outage, they contacted officials of Power Holding Company of
Nigeria (PHCN), but they could not fix the problem and the airport’s
standby generator was faulty.

Okonjo-Iweala Asks World Bank To Help Create Nigerian Data Base
Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has asked for the World Bank’s support in creating a much needed data base to help improve the social safety nets in Nigeria.Continue reading at source
She spoke on Sunday at the on-going Spring Meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in Washington DC.
Okonjo-Iweala said the social safety nets had helped many countries to reduce poverty and unemployment rates but noted that it could be achieved with effective data base.
“The very important thing for a successful social safety net is targeting, you must have the bases to be able to target those who need help.
“So, I insisted that we don’t have a data base to know who are the poor and what level of income in Nigeria.
“It is not enough to know that 50, 60 or 70 per cent of the population are poor; you need to have data on the poor households because they are the ones to come up and collect the safety net.’’
Okonjo-Iweala said that Brazil had proved successful on social safety net because of its comprehensive data base of the people, which helped in disbursing funds to the right people.
According to the finance minister, Nigeria has yet to get the perfect key to a successful social safety net.
“But we don’t have one that we can rely on and not every State has one. So, I am saying to the World Bank and we are not the only country, help us to build this data base.’’
