MEMBERS of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State branch, have said that they will be forced to “down tools” in the state if Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State does not recall the sacked Lagos doctors.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday in Ibadan, the NMA chairman, Professor Millicent Obajimi, who was represented by the vice-chairman, Dr Muideen Olatunji, described the mass sack of the doctors by Lagos state government as hasty, cruel, insensitive and thoughtless.
Professor Obajimi declared: “The entire membership of NMA, Oyo State, hereby decries this rape on democracy in Lagos State and totally condemns this repressible action of the Lagos State Government in its entirety.”
While describing the recent crackdown on doctors in Lagos State as symptomatic of a wider state attack on the working class, Obajimi added, “the action by the Raji Fashola/ACN-led Lagos State government clearly underlines the high level contempt which pro-free market ruling elite in Nigeria of all shades hold the poor and working masses.”
She further lamented: “In order to break the fighting spirit of the doctors, the government went ahead, in an action reminiscent of military jackboot absolutism, to eject the doctors from their quarters, an action that runs contrary to government’s own tenancy law.”
